So you have decided to start a new blog or you have decided to move to your very own self-hosted website but don’t know how to go about it? You are at the perfect place!
I am going to tell you how to set up your blog in flat 15 minutes if you are already done with the three basics steps.
The Basics –
Choosing your Blog Niche – Blog niche is basically what you are going to write about and around. A blog niche should be very crisp and concise so that your readers know what to expect from you and your blog.
Choosing a blog name – Once you know what you are going to blog about the next and the most important step is to decide on a name. You need to make sure that your blog niche and your blog’s name relate to each other.
Investment – If you are willing to invest in your blog, decide on how much you can invest. Self-hosting is a paid service on any platform, I will be talking about it in detail later.
Once you have cleared the three basic stages, get ready to do the easiest thing that you will ever do for your blog – setting up a self-hosted website.
Choose a blogging platform –
There are billions of blogging platforms available for you but let me tell you about a few trusted blogging platforms.
Blogger by Google – It is owned by Google and free to use. You can choose to keep the default URL www.yourblogname.blogspot.com or you can purchase and use your own domain name (without the blogspot.com) once you register with Blogger. Something I need to clarify here is that if you choose Blogger as your blogging platform, purchasing your own domain name does not mean your content is self-hosted. Your blog will still be hosted on Google servers, so technically they own your content and you have no control over it.
Tumblr by Yahoo – It is similar to Blogger. You get a URL such as yourblogname.tumblr.com once you sign up for free.
WordPress.com – On the same lines, WordPress.com allows you to start a blog for free, hosted by them. Your URL will be www.yourblogname.wordpress.com. WordPress.com is a great platform to start off if you’re undecided on what to do and don’t want to commit to a domain name and paid web hosting just yet. The features in the wordpress.com platform are a great if you eventually want to make the big and best move to wordpress.org
WordPress.org – My blog that you’re reading right now is created on WordPress.org, so I will explain to you how to start a blog on this platform. If you are looking to take up blogging more professionally then wordpress.org is for you. The difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com lies on web hosting. A wordpress.org blog is a self-hosted blog, which means, you need to purchase a web hosting package with a company that will keep your information, all files, folders, and directories on their server.
If you want my honest advice a self-hosted blog not only makes you look like a professional blogger, but it is also easy to monetize. A self-hosted blog gives you a professional status that will help you build relationships with brands and companies, which later will translate into income. So this was all about the blogging platforms, from here on I will be talking about the actual reason why I made this post.
Note – This is not a sponsored or affiliated post. This post was made to help fellow bloggers who are striving to make it big as a blogger in this cat race.
I have never used any other hosting site other than
GoDaddy to create blogs/websites/ online stores for my friends and clients so I can only guide you to regarding Go Daddy. I have always compared different websites the pricing and support that I got on Godaddy is the reason I recommend it. You can see the pictures below to understand the why part. My brother who is a Website and App developer introduced me to go daddy and chooses it over any other hosting site.
Step 1 – Go to www.godaddy.com
Step 2 –Take your cursor on Hosting. A drop-down menu will open, click on WordPress hosting under WordPress solutions.
Step 3 – Select the type of plan you want. I will suggest sticking to the basic plan which costs you 99 rupees per month. The catch here is you need to buy the hosting for a minimum of 1 year to avail the super discount of 77% which sums up to rupees 1600 per year. If you can afford to invest some more rupees and believe in smart investing than I will suggest you to select a plan for 3 years. It costs you around 4000 rupees for 3 years and the best part is where others end up paying 18000-20000 rupees for 3 years of hosting on renewal you already have your smart investment in place. Click on Configure.
Step 4 – Click on continue without selecting an option.
Step 5 – The best part about Go Daddy is you get your domain free for the period of hosting you buy. So in case, you buy 3 years of hosting you get a free domain for 3 years. So type the domain (blog name/ web address) you want and check the spelling twice and click on search. I will suggest you buy a domain which has .com instead of .in or .org or any other domain.
Step 6 – Once your domain is available click on Select and Continue.
Step 7 – Select the duration of your hosting besides the Basic Managed WordPress websites package. I would suggest going for a 3-year duration as at renewal you need to pay 500/month. If you are a beginner you have 3 years to earn the amount you need to invest.
You get a free Go Daddy mail for 1 year with your purchase, which means you get free email id on your own domain name. Example – email@example.com. Click on proceed to checkout after making sure you have not added anything that you don’t intend to buy by mistake.
Step 8 – This page will take you to an payment page. You need to enter your payment details and once you are done with it you will land on the next page. I have not added a photo of this page for security reasons.
Step 9 – If you are the only one who is supposed to do the set up of your blog then click on Manage WordPress.
Step 9.1 – Or if you have someone to help you out type the details and hit the send invite button. If you need help from here on, please feel free to contact me my email id is hello@firstname.lastname@example.org
Step 10 – Here you get to choose your option of creating your new website or migrating your previous one. Once you are done selecting hit the Get Started button.
Step 11 – Sit back and give a pat on your back to yourself because you finally did it!
Step 12 – Select get started. Clicking on getting started will open a new window and you will be taken to the WordPress set up page. Please do not close this window as you need to come back and do few things on the dashboard.
Step 13 – Click on the start wizard.
Step 14 – Select and fill in your details like name of your blog in blog title example Miss Harshala and your tagline, for example, A lifestyle blog. Click on continue.
Step 15 – Fill in your contact details and click next. Please make sure that you only enter the details that you want to share with your readers as it is going to be visible publicly.
Step 16 – Choose a theme from the given options. You can always change the theme later.
Step 17 – Click on the install button and wait for your theme to get installed.
Step 18 – Once your Theme will be installed Customise your theme by adding details about you and your blog and don’t forget to save them.
Step 19 – Your website/blog is ready!
Step 20 – Visit the dashboard mentioned in Step 12 and check it out for email id and your hosting and domains expiration dates.
That’s all for now folks!
